Early Prostate Cancer Detection Pilot - Wolverhampton North Network PCN

Overview

This pilot initiative aimed to promote awareness and early detection of prostate cancer in Black men, a population at higher risk of developing aggressive disease. It serves as a blueprint for other PCNs to adopt and develop similar proactive approaches. West Midlands Cancer Alliance are encouraging GPs to follow the best practice in their surgery.

Project Aims

  • Promote the PSA blood test to identify early prostate cancer in high-risk populations.
  • Raise awareness of prostate cancer risk factors among patients and clinicians.
  • Identify patients with a family history of prostate cancer to guide early intervention.

Target Population

  • Patients up to the age of 70 who are considered at risk.
  • Patients with no previous PSA test result.
  • Exclusions: Patients who are palliative, housebound, or living in a care home.

Key Outcomes

  • Significant increase in PSA testing uptake among the target population.
  • Enhanced patient awareness of prostate cancer risk factors and early symptoms.
  • Identification of previously undetected cases through proactive screening.
  • A replicable framework that can be adapted across PCNs to improve early diagnosis rates.

Impact

This pilot demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted early detection programs within primary care. Its success provides a clear pathway for other networks to improve prostate cancer outcomes, particularly for high-risk groups.
