The ACCEND Framework is designed to enhance cancer care by providing a structured approach to education and professional development for healthcare professionals.

• It defines the essential Cancer Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) and offers a tailored educational structure to support progression at every stage of a cancer care career.
• Launched in January 2023, the framework aims to transform career pathways and improve training and development opportunities across the cancer workforce.
• It provides access to the education and training needed to meet role-specific competencies and includes dedicated resources for nurses, allied health professionals and those in cancer-related support roles.
• The ACCEND Framework delivers a nationally agreed career and education structure underpinned by clearly defined capabilities in practice.

Map Your Learning to the ACCEND Framework

All WMCA endorsed training aligns with the ACCEND framework.

You can easily map and log your learning to the Cancer Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) through the ACCEND ePortfolio.

To do this:

• Register and log in to the ePortfolio
• Click ‘Add Entry’
• Select 'Choose an item from the library'
• Change the provider to Oncology National Networking Forums
• Choose the relevant event you have attended (or plan to attend)

This tool offers a central space to track your professional development, reflections and achievements - supporting your ongoing career in cancer care.

Guy’s Cancer Academy has produced a short e-learning course to support staff who are new to a cancer admin role.

The comprehensive, self-paced course includes what cancer is, treatment options, and the impact cancer can have on patients and their families with a focus on the science and impact of cancer and cancer treatments, as well as good communication skills.

It is suggested that learners allow 3-4 hours to complete all components.

A suite of training modules has been compiled by by the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) to assist both new and existing cancer data administration personnel.

Each module contains:

• a narrated slide show
• a PDF supporting document that includes a full narrative notes

A free e-learning resource is available to support MDT Coordinators, navigators, and trackers with medical terminology specific to cancer, including anatomical terms, treatments, and diagnostics.

This self-paced e-learning tool allows learners to practice skills such as active listening and referral interpretation using fictional MDT resources.

Foundations of Cancer Care encompasses essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals to effectively support patients throughout their cancer journey, from prevention to end-of-life care.

The foundations of cancer care involve a comprehensive understanding of the disease, its treatment, and the holistic support required for patients and their families. This includes various educational programs and modules designed for healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in cancer care. The programme consists of 9 elearning sessions to support pre-registration healthcare professional students to develop fundamental knowledge of cancer and its consequences.

It also addresses the essential principles of supporting patients, helping learners understand the wider physical, emotional and practical needs that shape the cancer experience.

Participants who complete the module receive a certificate of completion, demonstrating their foundational knowledge and commitment to high‑quality cancer‑related practice.

The World Cancer Research Fund Cancer Prevention Course for health professionals covers information about lifestyle and cancer prevention.

It is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health and counts towards your Continuing Professional Development.This 2 hour e-earning course is suitable for anyone who works to improve public health.

• Learn how lifestyle affects cancer risk and receive useful and practical tips for cancer prevention, based on the latest scientific evidence.
• Gain confidence in talking about cancer prevention to patients and clients using approved behaviour change techniques.
• Debunk common cancer myths.
• Help people to live well during cancer.

The session covers key cancer risk factors including diet, physical activity, body weight, and alcohol.

Launched in December 2025 and run in partnership with CCLG, the Academy is a free, national, online learning and networking platform for professionals involved in the care of children affected by a brain tumour.

The Academy is open to professionals working across specialist centres, shared-care units, district general hospitals and community services and has been designed to support professionals who may not work in a specialist neuro-oncology centre, but who support children and families locally, including managing complications and supporting rehabilitation and follow-up.

The Academy team are particularly keen to increase engagement from POSCU, District General Hospitals and community teams, and would be very pleased if you could share this opportunity with colleagues in your service.

The Academy hosts a mix of formal courses, peer-led learning sessions, written resources, and speciality networking groups. Registration is free to anyone with an NHS email address and all online sessions are recorded and made available for members to access on-demand.

This Guys Cancer Academy learning package will provide you with the knowledge and skills on providing care to people suspected of having an acute oncology indication.

This course will enable you to: 

• Understand local Acute Oncology Services and how and when to contact these services
• Recognise patients presenting with an acute oncology indication
• Initiate the management of urgent / emergency treatment
• Be able to refer patients to the local Acute Oncology Service appropriately
• Ensure patients with an acute oncology indication have appropriate ongoing management.
