The event, organised by the Cancer Services team at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, gave local people living with a cancer diagnosis the chance to experience a range of relaxation therapies to support their physical and mental wellbeing, such as yoga, Tai Chi, acupressure, floristry and art therapy.
Pampering sessions held throughout the day provided patients and carers with relaxing massages, facials, hair styling and manicures, to help guests feel confident and cared for.
The event, held on 5 July in The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, even allowed attendees to enjoy exclusive tours of the stadium.
Jo Harvey, Lead Cancer Nurse at West Midlands Cancer Alliance and Sandwell and West Birmingham (SWB) NHS Trust said: “As part of my role at SWB, I get the privilege in helping to organise the cancer fair each year. It’s clear to see just how much the event means to our patients, and the day acts as a real opportunity to offer.
“The event gives patients the chance to speak to others in similar situations to them, but also provides them with some time to focus on their wellbeing at a time when they’re really in need of support.
“We always receive such wonderful feedback from those that attend and it’s great to see them leave the event looking (and feeling) uplifted!”.
The fair was supported by over 120 volunteers and staff from across the Trust.
Representatives from West Midlands Cancer Alliance attended the event to help encourage patients and members of the public to become ‘Patient Advocates’, offering them the chance to shape local services for cancer patients by sharing their views and personal experiences.
